Now that the dust has settled on primary election night, I wanted to take a moment and thank everyone for their support throughout these last few months. From my core team members, to our volunteers, we worked really hard. While I’m disappointed in results, we ran a great campaign. I met so many wonderful folks in our district, and I feel this race really energized the community. My hope is that last night's winner, Daniel Holt, will continue the momentum that Karl Rhoads built over the last 10 years, and advocate for the deserving people of District 29. Mahalo Nui Loa!
Fought to Ensure Neighborhood Boards Were Not Eliminated
My name is Valerie Belen Dionne, and I am running for State House District 29, which includes Kalihi, Palama, Iwilei, and Chinatown. I am running for office because I care about our community. The cultural diversity in our district is quite unique. But, like many urban areas in Hawaii, we have issues that need to be resolved. Our community faces three major issues. First, is homelessness, and the related sub issues such as drug/human trafficking, public safety, and affordable housing. Second, are other public safety issues unrelated to homelessness. Finally, we need to ensure economic viability for everyone in the community.
I believe my life experiences have prepared me to serve as your next representative, and I humbly ask for your support and vote in the primary election on August 13th.
My passion for advocacy stems from my 10 years at the Hawai‘i Government Employees Association (HGEA) – the largest public-sector labor union in Hawai‘i. I am honored to have received HGEA’s endorsement for this race. I left HGEA to pursue my educational goals. Yet, my passion for advocacy and commitment remains strong. I now own and operate the Dionne Law Firm. As a small business owner myself, I understand the challenges of our business community.
During this past legislative session, I was honored to serve in the House of Representatives, under the leadership of Rep. Joy San Buenaventura, Judiciary Vice-Chair, and Rep. Karl Rhoads, Judiciary Chair. Our House Judiciary Staff worked together closely on the bills that were heard in the Judiciary Committee hearings. It was truly an enlightening experience to work at the legislature, and I have a clear understanding of how the Legislature operates from the inside.
My 26 years of experience includes not only the Hawaii Legislature, but also State and Federal Government, The Hawaii Supreme Court, and private law firms specializing in areas such as Nursing Home abuse litigation, (FELA) Federal Employee’s Liability Act. I would be honored to serve as your Representative, and I truly believe that "together we can" make a difference.
